Despite strong safety concerns among the public,Japan reactivated a nuclear reactor on Tuesday in nearly two years. All Japan's nuclear plants were gradually shut down after a series of meltdowns at the Fukushima plant following the catastrophe at the Fukushima Daiichi complex triggered by a powerful earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.
The No. 1 reactor at Kyushu Electric Power Co.'s Sendai complex, located in southwestern Japan, became the first unit to go back online under a set of new, stricter regulations imposed after the triple reactor meltdowns at the Fukushima plant.
The restart could be a major boost for the nuclear goals of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who urges atomic power is necessary for lowering electricity prices and shoring up the economy. But there`s still strong public unease about a return to nuclear power.
