A fire was broke out on an MOL Ferry Co. ferry about 55 kilometers off Tomakomai, Hokkaido, northern Japan, on Friday evening.
The incident left l a crew member missing, according to the Japan Coast Guard and the operator.
The 71 passengers were evacuated on life boats by 7:33 p.m and 21 of the 24 crew members, excluding the captain, left the ferry about five minutes later.
Since the fire was reported at around 5:38 p.m, the Coast Guard has sent 16 ships and seven aircraft to the scene.
