SANTIAGO, CHILE — Eight people were killed and a million others were evacuated after a magnitude 8.3 earthquake rocked Chile on Wednesday.
The quake's epicenter was in the Pacific Ocean 46 km West of the Chilean town of Illapel. Other coastal towns such as Coquimbo, Tongay and Concon were hit by huge waves, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. A tsunami alert was issued for the entire Chilean coast but was later lifted.
The temblor occurred as a result of the Nazca Plate plunging beneath the South American Plate. The the Nazca Plate is moving at a velocity of 74 mm per year with respect to South America, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Chile is frequently hit by earthquakes. In 2010 a magnitude 8.8 earthquake hit central Chile, killing 500 people.
