The average life expectancy for Japanese women rose to a record high of 86.83 years in 2014 from 86.61 years the previous year, marking the world's longest for the third straight year.
Life expectancy equals the average number of years a person born in a given country would live if mortality rates at each age were to remain constant in the future. The life expectancy is shown separately for males and females, as well as a combined figure.
Japanese men had an average life expectancy of 80.50 years, also a record high, up from 80.21 years, ranking third along with Singapore and Switzerland.
