Honda to set an English as official language by 2020 as part of efforts to communicate better with foreign employees, the company has said.
With the adoption of the new rule, English will be used in meetings with foreign employees and for documents shared at its headquarters and overseas offices.
Honda aims to ensure better communication among employees by using English as the auto industry becomes increasingly globalized, it said.
The automaker is to use English in meetings even if there is only one foreign attendee. English also is to be used when the headquarters office gives instructions to its overseas offices.
However, Japanese or a local language will be used at meetings in which foreign employees are not in attendance and for documents shared only among Japanese employees. This rule also is to be applied to local offices overseas, according to the company.
Currently, Japanese is the main language used in teleconferences between the headquarters and overseas offices.
